UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein

Stiftung Zollverein
Historical site Colliery / coking plant

Probably the most important attraction in the Ruhr region is the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein.

The Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site in the north of Essen is an impressive monument to industrial heritage that captivates adventurers and explorers alike. Mined between 1851 and 1986, the colliery unleashed more than 240 million tons of coal from the depths of the earth. Once the largest coal mine in the world, it now stands as a powerful symbol of the transformation from an industrial coal pot to a vibrant cultural center of the Ruhr region.

The extensive area includes both the mine site and the mighty coking plant, which was once Europe's largest. Steel giants and robust stone buildings characterize the landscape, but nature is quietly and powerfully reclaiming its terrain. The wasteland is transformed into a breathtaking mosaic of flora and history under the shade of native woods and exotic plants. This captivating scenery unfolds its full effect in the extremely exciting contrast between the historical industrial backdrop and the dynamic experience of nature.
