A beautiful country tour by bike through the fields in the northern radrevier.ruhr.

More than 5 million people live in the Ruhr region. Of course, agriculture also plays an important role in supplying the inhabitants. Even in the heart of the Metropole Ruhr there are unexpectedly large fields and pastures. But it is precisely in the environs of the large cities that the landscape opens up and vast agricultural areas come to light. The 52-kilometre RevierRoute "Landpartie" leads through a particularly important agricultural region in the northern Ruhr area.
The starting point
The railway station in Dorsten is a particularly good place to begin this RevierRoute. The station is easy to reach by regional train. By car, there are suitable parking spaces in the vicinity of the town.
Start of the tour
From the junction at the station in Dorsten, the tour leads south through a bit of town traffic. From junction 66, the tour leads into Kirchheller Heide, which is initially characterised by wide fields with many farms and riding stables.
Small, village-like settlements are passed through again and again, as are wide fields.
Romanticism of the coal mines in the middle of the fields
If you look closely, you will even discover industrial heritage here, which is important for the Ruhr region. Shaft 10 of the Prosper Haniel colliery, the last colliery in the Ruhr region to be shut down in December 2018, still stands in the middle of Kirchheller Heide. The miners drove in from here while the coal was transported underground to the south of Bottrop and brought to the surface via a long conveyor belt near the tetrahedron.
The natural paradise of Kirchheller Heide
In the middle of Kirchheller Heide is a small lake landscape that is now a real natural idyll. The larger lakes, such as the Heidesee, were created by gravel extraction. Some smaller, almost mystical lakes, such as the Elsbachsee, also known as the Pfingstsee, are still being created. Due to subsidence caused by coal mining, the landscape sinks and lakes suddenly appear in places where there used to be forests or fields.
Agriculture in the northern Ruhr
The tour continues to the northwest. You will cycle through wide fields again. In Hünxe, a small town with nice cafés awaits the cyclists before the route continues northwards along the Wesel-Datteln Canal and the River Lippe.
The historic Lippe pastoral village of Krudenburg is cycled through and offers numerous photo opportunities.
Railway route cycling
In Drevenack, the tour comes across an old railway line that runs from Wesel to Dorsten. Although the route is not asphalted, it still offers cyclists relaxed riding away from road traffic. The former railway line is interrupted again and again, the short detours open up views of beautiful country houses and old windmills.
Back in Dorsten
On the last few metres, the RevierRoute leads over the Lippedeich, before crossing a bridge to return to the southern side of the Lippe and the
Wesel-Datteln Canal. In the centre of Dorsten, the Jewish Museum is particularly worth a visit.
