Colliery / coking plant

Industriekultur.

In 2021, Friedrich Heinrich Colliery was included in the Route of Industrial Heritage as the 27th anchor point. As the only industrial monument west of the Rhine, it impressively blends nature with industrial culture to create a unique experience. The Friedrich Heinrich mine, the third major colliery to be founded on the left bank of the Rhine, has a fascinating history. Acquired by a French banking group in 1906 in order to secure raw materials for local ironworks, a double shaft with coking plant was built from 1907 onwards. In 1924, the Lorraine-based De Wendel group took over the colliery before it was incorporated into Ruhrkohle AG in 1970.

Interesting milestones such as fully mechanised mining in August 1958, the world's first above-ground control stand in the 1980s and a world record in 1998 with 20,262 tonnes of daily production bring the history of this colliery to life. The merger of the Friedrich Heinrich/Rheinland and Niederberg pits to form Bergwerk West in 2002 only lasted a short time: mining on the Lower Rhine came to an end on 31 December 2012 with the closure of Bergwerk West.

Since then, the area has reinvented itself. Green spaces were redesigned and an animal park was integrated as part of the 2020 State Garden Show. The former colliery buildings now house residential units, artists' studios and a university. Visitors can explore the imposing winding tower, the authentic practice gallery, the miner's house and the City and Mining Information Centre. The Friedrich Heinrich Colliery Park is an innovative place that respects the past and at the same time is an inspiring space for new ideas.
