The Bochum Westpark creates a combination of historic industry, nature and cultural site. On the site, which has a history of 150 years of iron and steel production, a park has been created on different levels.
Ups and downs in Westpark Bochum:
Located just one kilometre from Bochum’s city centre, Westpark delivers a variety of experiences – in scenic terms, but also emotionally.
Let’s start with the facts:
Once a site owned by Krupp-Stahl AG, today the park has become an extraordinary blend of industrial monument and event space. There are various reminders of mining days, such as the partly preserved railway lines and of course the old industrial buildings. But the most striking aspect must be the various levels. Originally there to optimise production processes, they’ve now been converted into a great special feature for fans of obstacle courses. But less high-spirited visitors also get to share in the adventure, albeit via stairs, ladders and bridges.
Now, as regards those varied emotional experiences:
Although there are days when a quiet and peaceful visit to Westpark is the ideal recuperative break from the urban hustle and bustle, the centre of the park does also host some fairly boisterous events, especially in Jahrhunderthalle Bochum. At the time of its completion in 1902 the hall was intended as an event venue, although it then began to be used for industrial purposes. Since 2003 it has been serving a cultural function once again.
Today, the venue hosts events whose fame extends beyond the city boundaries, such as the Ruhrtriennale arts festival or the historic fair. Over the winter, the Jahrhunderthalle becomes an ice skating rink for two months. In summer, Westpark plays host to Paluma Festival, which is all about electronic music.
