Modern and contemporary art meets antiquity: two top-class collections are presented in the art collections of the Ruhr-Universität on campus. The Modern Art Collection presents developmental trends in US and European art from post-war modernism to the present day, while the Collection of Antiquities shows Greek, Roman and Persian artefacts.
In the heart of the Ruhr metropolis, you can immerse yourself in a world where visions became reality. Just two years after Ruhr-Universität Bochum was founded, it received a collection of avant-garde works of art from Albert Schulze-Vellinghausen that make the pulse of post-war modernism palpable. Names such as Josef Albers, Cy Twombly and Al Held are exemplary of this. This initial collection has been continuously expanded and today reflects the dynamic flow of the times.
Thanks to generous sponsorship in the 1970s, such as that of patron Paul Dierichs, works by greats such as Giacometti, Rickey and Serra were added. Particularly exciting is the arc that was drawn to the present day in the 1990s with photographs by Bernd and Hilla Becher and artists such as Gerhard Richter and Bruce Nauman. Works by contemporary creatives such as Katharina Grosse and James Turrell fit in seamlessly and constantly offer new perspectives.
The architecture of the university itself, a masterpiece of international modernism from the 1960s and 1970s, provides fertile ground for art history to come alive. Here, visitors encounter a magical dialogue between antiquity and modernity, past and present. The rich selection of around 1,000 works of art is constantly revitalised by thematic presentations and invites you to take an inspiring tour.
