Historic town center

Wunderschöne Fachwerkhäuser in der historischen Altstadt

Time seems to stand still here: The old village of Westerholt with its more than 60 well-preserved and mostly listed half-timbered houses is an idyll in the middle of the vibrant Ruhr region. The delicately designed front gardens and windows draw the eye just as much as the impressive inscriptions in beams and on gates, which embody stories from the past. The name Westerholt, derived from "wood in the west", refers to its location to the west of Recklinghausen. Originally handed over by the imperial court to a loyal vassal, the lands are deeply rooted in the region's past.

The history of the old village is closely linked to Westerholt Castle, now known as Schloss, which was built in the 12th century. In 1421, the village was granted the imperial privilege of "freedom", a settlement with limited town rights. The oldest of the almost completely preserved half-timbered houses date back to the early 17th century, the period before and during the Thirty Years' War. Together with the old parish church, the town gate and the castle complex, they form a historic old town that is affectionately known as the Westphalian Rothenburg.

The old village of Westerholt offers more than just a glimpse into the past - it is a popular excursion destination that welcomes its guests with charming cafés and restaurants. The historic charm combined with modern amenities attracts adventurous travellers from all directions. Here you will find a scenery that leaves nothing to be desired and makes every discovery an experience in the here and now.
