The Hundertwasser House in Grugapark
That's no mirage you see there in the middle of the green oasis of Grugapark. Even though this golden onion dome could be straight out of the Arabian Nights, this is actually the Hundertwasserhaus. And not just any Hundertwasser house, but the last one designed by the Austrian painter and artist. Friedensreich Hundertwasser unfortunately passed away in 2000 and was therefore unable to witness the opening in 2005.
About life: However, the graphic artist and draughtsman had always dealt with the subject of life and death in his works. As a recurring symbol, Hundertwasser understood spirals as a translation for life and death. It is also relatively obvious that straight lines were not exactly his thing. He even condemned them.
In keeping with these leitmotifs, this colorful building, characterized by soft, organic shapes, was created in the middle of nature in Grugapark.
The house, which now belongs to the McDonald's Children's Aid Foundation, is used as a home for families of seriously ill children who are being treated at the neighboring university hospital. The families can live here for a while to recover from the stressful hospital routine.
