If you are looking for a standard gauge railway with steam engines from the ‘romantic’ age of rail, the Hespertalbahn in Essen is what you are looking for.

Hespertalbahn - Nostalgic journey through time along Lake Baldeney
A fascinating experience for adventure seekers and history buffs alike: The historic Hespertalbahn, pulled by a majestic steam locomotive, offers an impressive journey from the old Kupferdreh station along the picturesque Lake Baldeney to the mysterious castle ruins of Haus Scheppen. At a charming 15 km/h, this contemporary witness to industrial culture makes its way through the idyllic landscapes that were once the territory of the Pörtingsiepen colliery. A must for anyone with a passion for culture and nostalgia.
