At the beginning of the last century, mining expanded enormously in Duisburg and the surrounding area. In order to be able to offer the recruited workers from Silesia, Austria-Hungary and the Netherlands adequate accommodation, a miners' settlement was built around the Rheinpreussen colliery in 1903.

By 1968, hundreds of flats had already fallen victim to demolition, but the residents intervened. With courage and organised actions, including hunger strikes, they created a turning point in 1979: the city of Duisburg acquired the estate and saved it for future generations.
