Most of the contemporary witnesses of Rhenish industrial heritage can now be visited mainly in the open air. Most of the coal mining took place far below the turf. So if you want to gain a deeper insight into the history of the region, you should safely visit the German Mining Museum.

This is one of the last places in Germany where you can go underground! The rope ride simulator takes you 1,200 metres down into the earth's core. The adjusted temperature down there quickly makes you realise how hot it used to be for the miners.
