GERMAN POP ART – Between Provocation and Mainstream. The Heinz Beck Collection on display at the LUDWIGGALERIE.
Following major exhibitions on AMERICAN POP ART (2016) and BRITISH POP ART (2019), the Ludwiggalerie in Oberhausen Castle is now dedicating itself to the works and artists of GERMAN POP ART from 25 January to 3 May 2026.
The phenomenon of Pop Art, which is mostly associated with the English-speaking world, also found strong artistic expression in Germany in the 1960s and 1970s. These works differ significantly from their American and British counterparts, particularly in their choice of subject matter. Although ostensibly oriented towards mass culture and advertising, the works of German artists were not underpinned by the unbroken optimism of their English-speaking colleagues.
With works by forty-six artists, the exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of the German manifestations of Pop Art. Themes such as the German "Wirtschaftswunder", the critical examination of the American way of life, the Vietnam War, the collective repression of recent German history, and anti-museum attitudes can be rediscovered in more than 180 prints, objects, sculptures, and multiples.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Friends of the LUDWIGGALERIE. The cultural partner is WDR 3. Further information on the museum's educational programme accompanying the exhibition and the supporting programme can be found at www.ludwiggalerie.de
