Hoheward spoil tip

Marie-Curie-Straße, 45699 Herten
Stockpile

Die Halde und das zugehörige Besucherzentrum Hoheward bieten ein vielfältiges Freizeitangebot.

Created as part of the striking slag heap landscape of the northern Ruhr region, the Hoheward slag heap rises majestically to a height of 152 metres. This impressive landmark is an important part of the Industrial Heritage Route and fascinates visitors with its transformation into a multifaceted leisure and cultural landscape. As one of the largest spoil tips of its kind, it is a popular destination for excursions and adventurers.

Whether you are a hiker, jogger or mountain biker - the spoil tip offers both challenge and relaxation. The ascent is rewarded with a breathtaking panorama: the view sweeps from the gasometer in Oberhausen to the Dortmund television tower to the Düsseldorf Rhine Tower 50 kilometres away - a visual journey through the Ruhr region on a clear day.

A special attraction is the horizon observatory with its imposing steel arches, which can be seen far beyond the silhouette of the slag heap. These form the local meridian on the platform and serve as a fascinating instrument for observing the sky. The horizontal sundial also features a large obelisk - a highlight for astronomy enthusiasts. Since 2008, the imposing Dragon Bridge has provided a direct link to the Hochlarmark neighbourhood park and on to the Dreieck housing estate. The bridge construction resembles the skeleton of a dragon and attracts fascinated glances with its impressive design.

At the foot of the slagheap is the Ewald colliery with the Hoheward visitor centre, which houses the "New Horizons" exhibition. Hiking and Segway tours across the slag heap can also be booked here to experience the landscape in depth.

Experience the fantastic and varied views on the Hoheward slag heap - an adventure for all explorers in the heart of the Ruhr region.
